I am really cute! In most other publishing houses a professional editor would have chopped out all that fluff with a blue pencil, but not Kelby’s editors. It would have been a better book had it been properly edited.

Once you get around the silliness, the book is structured logically and the information is detailed. Lightroom is big and complicated and anybody needs training to use its features, some of which are well-hidden. This book would be a far better resource for readers like me if an editor had insisted on clarity. The information is in there, but you have to work around Scott Kelby’s song and dance routine to find it.

Lightroom 4 is a marvelous tool, extremely complicated and full of resources, and I have come to depend on it for all my professional work. You can learn to operate this tool with Kelby’s book but it makes a complicated process even more challenging for anyone new to LR. As a long-time Photoshop Elements and iPhoto user, I recently purchased Lightroom to do a better job of digital image organization and manipulation. I’d read it on my Kindle on the bus to work or on the treadmill, then try the things I’d learned on the computer.

His instructions were clear and well illustrated, and did a great job of discussing WHY you’d want to do something and not just HOW to do it. His style is light-hearted, which made the reading enjoyable as well as informative. Now that I have some appreciation for all the incredible things that Lightroom can do, I realize there is no way I could begin to take advantage of its power without this book.

I wasn’t new to editing in a Photoshop environment, but I quickly learned that Lightroom is a very different platform and process. Kelby’s book does a good job of guiding an experienced editor through the transition from the old days to the LIghtroom ways.

It’s as much about “workflow” as it is about the actual editing. The Kelby book is presented in a step-by-step manner to teach the new tricks needed for migration to Lightroom. I started with that as a guide, and then switched to the FAQ book to find quick answers. But I still refer to Kelby when entering new areas of Lightroom. I recommend getting both books.

You will keep both of them close at hand. Although Lightroom 5 is already out and I am awaiting delivery of that book, Scott Kelby makes setting up Lightroom very easy for the absolute novice; which I am. Not only does Kelby give advice how to set up Lightroom but demonstrates step by step which button to click and which to leave alone and why.

A piece of advice here, don’t buy the kindle edition At least not with my old eyes. The workbook makes it easy to thumb back and forth to check what you are doing and to get it right the first time. Also note taking is easier in the paper copy then on the kindle edition.

I have both and believe me when I say get the hard copy. Kelby’s book is a must have for anyone new to post production processing. Even after a couple years experience with Lightroom 3, I wouldn’t have gotten my money’s worth out of Lightroom 4 unless I also had this book.

I used Kelby’s Lightroom 3 book to learn Lightroom 3, so I thought there would only be a little incemental stuff to be learned in his LR4 book, but I was wrong — I’ve learned new stuff about features that were in LR3, as well as how to use the new LR4 features.

Whether new to Lightroom or upgrading from previous version, Kelby’s books have been invaluable. Especially helpful is the way he describes the multiple ways to do a particular thing, and then tells you which way he does it and why.

Although I followed some online training I only covered what I wanted to know. I found the different modes a little confusing and I still think Adobe could do more to build in workflows into the user experience of Lightroom.
