Ive just purchased the drive so I cant really speak on its failure rate yet Hopefully I wont have to anytime soon But setup was pretty straight forward, Ive read a few reviews here where ppl claim that you NEED to install the iomega Storage manager software, I didn’t, I simply plugged it into my router, went to my network folder on windows 7 found my shares, and mapped them to the corresponding drive letters.

No need for their storage manager software, also I found remote access to be a tad tedious, I was unable to get access to my Nas smb share via remote 3g, or wi-fi, but remote sharing via FTP, and the UPNp media server works, like a charm.

Since this box uses twonky media server, if you want to access it remotely via upnp you have to forward port to gain access, and port 21 for ftp. Also, if you can use the quick transfer for large transfers of files, drag and dropping to your nas through my computer will take ages, don’t ask me why but it does almost 10 min to transfer mb, quick transfer was able to transfer just under gb of movies in less than 5 hours.

Ive tried to stream from remote wifi a few times, the hardware on this thing isn’t the strongest, I believe its 2 mhz dual core, and mb of ram so don’t expect it to be perfect remotely I suggest you let it buffer for min before watching and have a strong wifi connection, but from within the network it works perfectly Ive stream only tested it streaming to 2 diff devices at once but it worked pretty solidly.

With all that being said those are pretty much the only uses I have for the nas, so i cant speak on its other functionalist, but from my perspective its a pretty solid unit especially with a dollar price tag, that’s just barely above the price of a regular external and this has network access don’t miss out on this opportunity!

I had two of these, first one broke after a bit over a year red light turned on, probably a hard drive failure , 2nd after 5 months of use, both stopped to show up in the network, and lost my files and backups, bad product DO NOT BUY these, if a product is advertized as a backup solution it should not break this soon, really disappointed.

Suggest you go with another brand that is more solid and pay couple of 10s of dollars more for it, like WD etc. I can’t recall how many hours I have spent trying to figure this out. Now, I haven’t had any drive failures as many others complain about, in fact, I’m still on factory drive after several years. The problem I have with this PoS is the functionality.

Then it will unfreeze saying an error message. I have other network drives that never give me that problems. The web interface is horrible. Sure, there are a lot of extra stuff, but for those that like to organize media, the web interface is impossible to use. You can’t move media around at least i have yet to find a way from one folder to another. By slow, i mean my network devices can find this, and see the content, but it’s almost impossible to stream anything from this.

When it does stream, it’s always very choppy and laggy. Say yourself a headache and hassle, avoid this drive. I tried to give this a chance before giving it a less than favorable review; however, it is just not a great product. Very simply put it is slow and, as others have articulated, unreliable. The cloud feature is not user friendly. All the bells and whistles this thing offers are irrelevant simply based on the speed and reliability challenges as those are the most important things.

I fear anything that is backed up on this drive will inevitably be lost when the drive fails. Here’s my take on it: Setup was a snap. I noticed another reviewer had a problem with the online portion of the setup using Internet Explorer; I use Firebox and the setup was smooth and uneventful. I simply attached the supplied Ethernet cable to the drive and my D-Link router, then connected the power supply.

The hardware was detected immediately and I installed the software from the included CD. Three easy steps completed in minutes. I admit to not planning to use the this drive for sharing outside my network of two home computers, so some of the capabilities are beyond the scope of this review.

However, I set up everything as if I were going to share with a remote device and it functions flawlessly using the Omega Personal Cloud feature. Simply invite guests and they can have access to photos, movies, files and more includes the ability to read and write to files and folders on the network drive. Another feature is the powerful backup: you can easily back up all the computers on your network simply by downloading and installing the available client backup software. I currently have a two-year subscription to Carbonite and am considering using the Omega Home Media Network Hard Drive to perform this function instead.

The limits? I have set up sub-folders for our two computers so the music, video and data areas do not co-mingle. Each of us can access or share the contents from our personal computers.

A remote procedure call RPC protocol error occurred. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.
